UNESCO World Heritage Tectonic Arena Sardona

The UNESCO World Heritage Site Tectonic Arena Sardona allows unique insights into the history of the formation of the alpine mountains and valleys.

The collision of Africa with Europe has piled up the Alps over millions of years. Primordial rock strata were pushed over each other, folded and broken. Diverse evidence and traces of these mighty forces are exceptionally well visible in the Tectonic Arena Sardona. They allow us to clearly reconstruct the rock movements that took place in the earth’s crust a long time ago.

For over two centuries, scientists from all over the world have been researching the processes of mountain building. They are trying to unravel everything about the formation of mountains in the Tectonic Arena Sardona.
